Understanding Vertical and Horizontal Reviewer Assignments

Overview

When assigning reviewers, you can choose between two assignment methods:

  • Vertical Assignments
  • Horizontal Assignments

The assignment method determines how reviewers are assigned to applicants and competencies.

Vertical Assignments

In a vertical assignment, a reviewer is assigned to review all competencies for an applicant.

This means each reviewer evaluates the complete applicant experience rather than individual competencies.

Example:

Applicant A has three competencies:

  • Communication
  • Leadership
  • Critical Thinking

A reviewer assigned using a vertical assignment reviews all three competencies for Applicant A.

Horizontal Assignments

In a horizontal assignment, reviewers are assigned to specific competencies across multiple applicants.

This means each reviewer evaluates the same competency for many applicants.

Example:

Applicant A, Applicant B, and Applicant C all require reviews for Communication, Leadership, and Critical Thinking.

A reviewer assigned to Communication reviews the Communication competency for all applicants.

Reviewers per Applicant

During reviewer assignment, you can specify how many reviewers should be assigned to each applicant.

The selected number of reviewers will be assigned to each applicant included in the assignment.

Assignment Distribution

Bulk Assign distributes assignments as evenly as possible across the selected reviewers.

Choosing an Assignment Method

When configuring reviewer assignments during Bulk Assign:

  • To create vertical assignments, assign reviewers to the All Competencies column. Each reviewer is assigned to all competencies for an applicant.
  • To create horizontal assignments, assign reviewers to one or more individual competency columns instead of the All Competencies column. Each reviewer is assigned to review only the selected competencies across multiple applicants.
