Understanding Main and Sub Competencies
Overview
Main and Sub Competencies help keep related competencies together throughout the reviewer assignment process.
Rather than assigning reviewers to every competency individually, reviewers are assigned to a Main Competency. Kira automatically assigns any linked Sub Competencies to the same reviewer for the same applicant.
This reduces manual assignment, keeps related competencies together, and creates a more organized review experience.
Key Concepts
Main Competencies are the competencies administrators assign reviewers to.
Sub Competencies are linked to a Main Competency and are automatically assigned whenever the Main Competency is assigned.
For example:
Main Competency
- Motivation
Sub Competencies
- Communication
- Professionalism
- Red Flags
When a reviewer is assigned to Motivation, they are automatically assigned to Communication, Professionalism, and Red Flags for the same applicant.
Supported Configurations
Main and Sub Competencies support different assessment designs.
One Main Competency with Multiple Sub Competencies
A Main Competency can be linked to one or more Sub Competencies.

In this example Motivation is the main competency and communication, professionalism and red flags are all sub competencies linked to it.
Shared Sub Competencies
A Sub Competency can also be linked to multiple Main Competencies.
This allows the same competency to be evaluated alongside multiple interview questions when appropriate.
If separate ratings for the Sub Competency are required for each question response, create unique Sub Competencies for each Main Competency instead of sharing a single Sub Competency.
Assigning Reviewers
Reviewers are always assigned to Main Competencies.
Sub Competencies are assigned automatically and do not need to be assigned separately.
When assigning reviewers using Bulk Assign or Assign Reviewers via CSV, only Main Competencies appear during the assignment process. Kira automatically creates the associated Sub Competency assignments, ensuring reviewers receive all linked competencies for the same applicant.
Reviewer Experience
In the Review Platform, Main and Sub Competencies are displayed together so reviewers can easily see which competencies are related.
When reviewing a Sub Competency, the response associated with its Main Competency is displayed automatically. This allows reviewers to evaluate the Sub Competency without navigating back to the original question.
Current Availability
Main and Sub Competencies are currently configured by the Kira team during assessment setup and cannot be created or managed within the Assessment Builder.
