Choosing practice questions
Practice questions help applicants become familiar with Kira before beginning their assessment. Kira provides default practice questions, or you can create a custom practice experience.
Use the guidelines below when choosing your practice questions.
Customize your practice questions
Custom practice questions can help create a more consistent applicant experience and better reflect your assessment. When creating practice questions, we recommend:
- Choosing questions that help applicants become comfortable with the types of responses they'll provide
- Keeping practice questions separate from the questions used in the actual assessment
- Using the same language as your assessment - Kira's default practice questions are available in English
If you're filming custom practice questions, see our videography guidelines for recommendations.
Choose your approach
There are two common approaches to practice questions: assessment-style questions and ice-breaker questions.
Assessment-style questions
Assessment-style practice questions are similar in format or style to your assessment questions without duplicating their content.
This approach can:
- Familiarize applicants with the Kira assessment process
- Help applicants understand the general format and style of questions they'll encounter
- Give applicants an opportunity to practice preparing and responding under similar conditions
Avoid using practice questions that are too similar to your actual assessment questions or reveal content applicants will encounter later.
Ice-breaker questions
Ice-breaker questions are simple, approachable prompts that aren't related to the content of your assessment.
This approach can:
- Familiarize applicants with the Kira assessment process
- Give applicants an opportunity to test the experience and practice responding
- Help applicants become more comfortable before beginning their assessment
Keep in mind that ice-breaker questions don't give applicants an indication of the content they'll encounter in the assessment.
Some examples include:

- Tell us about one of your hobbies.
- Describe your perfect weekend.
- If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
- Are you an early riser or a night owl? Why?
- Tell us about a book, movie, or game you've enjoyed recently.
- If you could share a meal with anyone, who would you choose and why?
- What is something you enjoy learning about?
